Test Scenarios for Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) in TIA Portal

Aim of the Experiments: To examine the properties and behavior of a Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) under various test scenarios.

Experimental Setup – Basic Commissioning:

The experiment setup includes the following components:

·        Servo Test Unit: Control unit, Electric servo machine, Control software: ActiveServo

·        Frequency Inverter Unit: Sinamics S120 inverter, Controlled using Siemens TIA Portal Starter App

·        PC with Software Packages: TIA Portal, ActiveServo

Experiment 1: Synchronous Behaviour of PMSM (No Load)

1.      Prepare for No-Load: Ensure the ActiveServo software is set to zero torque so the motor spins freely without mechanical load.

2.      Enable Drive: In the TIA Portal Control Panel, click the ON (I) button under "Drive enables" to activate the motor.

3.      Set Initial Speed: In the "Speed" input field, enter 200.00 rpm and press the Forward button.

4.      Read Frequency: Navigate to the "Actual values" section at the bottom of the panel. From the "Further actual values" dropdown menu, select Output frequency. At 200 rpm, this should display roughly 10.0 Hz.

5.      Iterate: Increase your speed setpoint to reach the next frequency steps (20 Hz, 30 Hz, 40 Hz, 50 Hz). Since 10 Hz is 200 rpm, calculate and enter the subsequent speeds (e.g., 400 rpm for 20 Hz, 600 rpm for 30 Hz).

6.      Record Data: At each step, record the actual output frequency and the "Speed actual value" into your spreadsheet.

Experiment 2: Measurement of Current Components id and iq Under Different Loads

1.      Set Speed: Enter a target speed (such as 500 rpm or 1000 rpm) in the TIA Portal Control Panel and activate the motor.

2.      Set Torque: In the ActiveServo software, select the Torque mode. Enter a desired load setting in the torque setpoint box between 0.2 and 1.5 Nm. Click "Apply Value" and then "Enable" to engage the active brake.

3.      Monitor Values: In the TIA Portal "Rotate and Optimize" view, navigate to the "Further Actual values" section. Select and observe the "Current actual value field-generating" (id) and "Current actual value torque-generating" (iq).

4.      Record Data: For each torque setting, record the field-generating current, torque-generating current, speed, and output frequency.

Experiment 3: Determination of efficiency at different operating points

1.      Set the Load in ActiveServo: Launch the ActiveServo software and select the Torque mode. Enter your desired load setting in the torque setpoint box, click Apply Value, and then click Enable to engage the active brake.

2.      Navigate TIA Portal: In the TIA Portal Project tree, expand your drive axis settings and open the Parameterization view to access the full expert parameter list.

3.      Read Electrical Power: Locate parameter r82 [2] ("Active power actual value") in the list to record the system's real-time electrical power consumption.

4.    Calculate Mechanical Power: Compute the mechanical power () manually using your recorded torque () and speed () values with the standard rotational power formula:

5.      Record Data: Log the measured electrical power, the actual speed, the actual torque, and your newly calculated mechanical power for each load setting.
