Servo Drive Control Sequence in TIA Portal
This procedure outlines the steps to open a pre-configured TIA Portal project, establish a connection to a Siemens SINAMICS drive unit, and access the master control panel to operate the motor for testing or optimization.
Step 1: Launch TIA Portal and Open Existing Project
- Launch
the Siemens TIA Portal V18 software.
- In the
Portal View start screen, ensure the Start tab is selected on the
left menu.
- Click
on Open existing project.
- In the
'Recently used' list, locate and select the project named "PMSM.ap18".
The path is shown as: C:\Users\Student\Documents\Automatisierung\PMSM.
- Click the Open button in the bottom right corner.
Step 2: Confirm Project Open and Transition to Project
View
- A
"First steps" screen will appear, confirming that 'Project
"PMSM" was opened successfully.'
- To
proceed with the hardware configuration and online connection, navigate to
the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Click on the arrow icon next to Project view to switch from the simplified Portal view to the detailed Project view.
Step 3: Configure Communication Interface and Go Online
- The
main Project View will open. In the top toolbar, click the Go online
button (usually represented by an icon of two connecting plugs). A
"Go online" dialog box will appear.
- In the
dialog box, set up the communication path for "Drive_unit_1":
- Type
of the PG/PC interface: Select PN/IE (Profinet/Industrial
Ethernet).
- PG/PC
interface: Select your computer's actual network card from the
dropdown (e.g., "Realtek PCIe 2.5GbE Family Controller").
- Connection
to interface/subnet: Select the specific port or subnet (e.g., "Direct
at slot 'CU X127'").
- Click
the Start search button. The software will scan the network for
compatible devices.
- Once
the scan is complete, and a compatible device (e.g., drive_unit_1 with
type S120/S150 PN) is listed under 'Select target device' with a green
checkmark indicating successful connection, click the Go online
button at the bottom right of the dialog.
- Step
4: Address Default Connection Path Prompt
- Depending
on your TIA Portal settings, a prompt titled "Default connection path
for online access" may appear. This asks if you want to save the
settings you just configured as the default.
- Click Yes to save these interface settings for future use. The software will continue connecting to the online drive.
Step 5: Navigate to the Drive Axis Commissioning Screen
- Observe
the Project tree on the left. If the online connection is successful, you
will see green dots/icons next to the project items.
- Expand
the Project tree structure as follows: PMSM > Drive_unit_1 [S120
CU310-2 PN] > Drive_axis_1 [PM].
- Double-click
on the entry Rotate & optimize.
- In the central work area, the "Control panel" for the selected axis will open. Currently, most functions will be greyed out and inactive because Master Control has not yet been assumed by TIA Portal.
Step 6: Activate Master Control and Accept Safety Warning
- On the
Control panel screen in the central area, locate the 'Master control'
group. Click the Activate button.
- A
critical safety pop-up window titled "Activate master control"
will appear. This window warns that you are about to assume manual control
of the drive, overriding safety shutdowns from higher-level controllers.
- Review
the monitoring time (default is 2000 ms).
- Check
the box for the warning: "By disabling this option, you can only
stop the motor using the control panel buttons... a hardware solution for
the Emergency Stop circuit is mandatory." (or similar applicable
safety acknowledgment).
- Read
the safety message at the bottom: "Non-compliance can result in
injury and material damage." Check the confirmation box "Continue
without quick stop function...".
- Click OK to assume Master Control. The Control panel functions in Step 5 will now become active, allowing you to manually enable the drive and set speed setpoints for testing.
Step 7: Enable the Drive and Set Speed Setpoint
- Verify
the drive's operational state in the "Drive status"
section; both "Ready for switching on" and "Operation
enabled" should display green checkmarks indicating the drive is
ready.
- In the
"Control" section, enter your desired target speed into the "Speed
" input field (for example, 500.00 rpm).
- Click
the "Forward" or "Backward" buttons to command the
motor to run at the specified speed in the chosen direction.
- Observe the real-time feedback in the "Actual values" section at the bottom of the window, which monitors parameters such as “Output frequency (f)”, “Current actual value torque-generating (Iq)”, “Current actual value field-generating (Id)” and so on.
